The life and death of James Webb

Excuse me, would you like my newspaper?"

Yet another secret agent kitty

From the "way too much information" department

Now WinXP can tell you it's out of virtual memory in plain English, and it'll hear you when you tell it to get bent

Life is changing. My Comcast service just swapped DSUs, and in the process of reconfiguring my router for the change, it got hosed. I can't reconfigure the software with the broken keyboard controller on the existing machine, and I don't have a fully built replacement. I guess I'm going to have to break down and buy myself a new video card for the primary machine, get that old Matrox in to the K6-2, use it as my new router shell. It's overkill, but it's not like I'm using the K6-2 for anything. Meanwhile, I've secured my machine for direct connection to the cablemodem, but I'm still a little worried about NT4's rather flimsy security without a dedicated firewall in place. Comcast is actually telling people to join their SMB workgroup. That's insane. Ever seen a college network? Notice all the unprotected PCs, just waiting to be exploited? That's what they're opening up. Yeah, I think I'll be getting the GNATBox back online.
In other news, got my brakes fixed today. I had the rotors turned before the roadtrip, lo and behold, they warped before we even got to NOLA. So I got replacements that are twice as thick (and a shitload heavier) put on over lunch. Don't really care too much about the sidemirror or scratch at the moment, I don't think I'm going to have the free time anyway.
Which brings me to my project. I've spent the last 3-4 weeks looking for the perfect Valentine's gift for P. After visiting a fair amount of clothing sites, fruitlessly, I've decided to just make something myself. I haven't used a sewing machine or cut from a pattern in 4 years, but it's my only hope after a slew of slow/no response to my many emails, items out of stock, and 6-8 week shipping times. It's going to be quite an undertaking, so if anyone has 31337 $3am$+r3$$ sk1||z, this is me asking for your help. Let's just put it this way: it's going to require heavy pattern modification, and a trip to both the hardware and computer stores in the area. Lex generously offered to help, but we're both a bit rusty. Worst case scenario, we give it our best shot. If we suck, I just have it made by a pro. None the less, I think it can be done, and I really want to make something by hand that she'll truly love.
