The Veritable TechNinja
No PS3 for me until they come down to a remotely reasonable price.
No Wii for me until Friday, most likely.
That makes me a sad panda.
I would never pay that much for a game system. I'm protesting. Sure, the technology might be highly expensive, but I think they should wait a couple years for it to become more reasonably priced. I really think there's still lots of life in the PS2 and Gamecube.
But anyway, I really want the Wii. At least it's innovative.
The screwed up thing is that the PS3 actually costs Sony about $840 to make. As for life in the PS2/Cube, definitely. Hell, FFXII and Guitar Hero II just came out for the PS2.
I know, that seems to me to be an indicator that they're releasing the system way too early. We all know how technology is these days; if they would just wait another two years or so, we would all still have tons of fun with the older systems and PS3 technology would become several hundred dollars cheaper. But since the console companies are always battling to beat each other out and get out the new system the earliest, they end up having to sell the system at an obscenely high price that still amounts to a loss for them. And it's a loss for us because if we're not wealthy then we don't get to play the exciting new games!
I agree, the PS3 is over-equipped, it's basically a cheap gaming computer. Especially considering the upgradeable firmware (see convo with Ed) and it's ability to run full-blown operating systems. The Dreamcast's WinCE was crippled and useless without a standardized way to get software on it. The PS3 can run several flavors of Linux, with real wireless network, optical/hard disk, and keyboard support. I imagine the processor might be what IBM was cooking up for Apple for the current gen before they went to Intel chips.
I'd offer to sell you mine, but I want to make sure all the games I actually care about from the PS2 are forward-compatible.
YAY!!! SEXUAL HARRASSMENT PANDA!!!
I say "that makes me a sad panda" all the time and only a small percentage of my friends ever know what I'm talking about, which is weird considering the majority of them watch South Park.
There's been so many episodes with so many random characters it's tough to keep them straight. Still, Sexual Harassment Panda is one of my favorites.
PS3 is getting bad reviews already.
What I've heard:
-Game freezes up with BSOD after 30 minutes
-No rumble in the controller cause Sony didn't want to pay the licensing fee
-Can't play shit til you log on the internet and update the PS3
-Graphics aren't earth shattering and are comparible to the reasonably priced X box.
Now on the other hand, the Wii is supposed to be the winner this year because there are more available and the price is reasonable.
Then theres me. If I want to play a game, I'll do it on my computer. Its pretty rare anyways.
I've read about all of those except for the required internet-only firmware part. Good thing I went to Best Buy and bought a cheap wireless router yesterday... Though, I really don't like the idea of having to sit around and not play video games for an indeterminate amount of time after I turn the box on. That's getting close to...
My next topic, why I'm a console gamer. I stopped playing PC games because of that exact reason, not wanting to flash firmware and update drivers before I can play games. I do that shit all day at work, and they pay me for it. I'm not paying game companies to do it in my spare time. Nothing against PC gaming, I just can't do it any more.
I'm doing the same thing you are... I'm just going to hold out. Only one or two titles worth owning right now anyway. I hear a lot of launch titles are terrible. :[
As for the Wii, I want one pretty bad, but I'll probably wait a while on that too... because I'll be forced to more than likely.
I don't care if Red Steel sucks, just the prospect of a wiimote sword fight is awesome. I practically laughed at the DS' stylus, but the wiimote is actually cool.
